Hello Vlas, once again waiting new COD !!!

Can you explain us why there are so few WU ?
I know it is published on main site. No problems.
But WHY ??? I see you give a lot of energy for this project.
You are gratefull.

Like you see, everyone, here, returns all WU very fast.
perhaps about 50% of WU are retured before the queue become empty !!!

Without people who download and not "crunch"
Or perhaps a very low percentage of such people.
Kind regards and best regards from Belgium to everyone.

Can you explain us why there are so few WU ?

This project depends on the data from the Crystallography Open Database (COD). After the existing structures in the COD were processed (in September 2017), the project started to calculate the diffraction patterns for the newly added structures. The COD is updated by researchers. Only about 1000 new structures are added to the COD per month. One new structure yield 36 new WUs in general, so no more than 36 000 new WUs per month is possible.

In short, the number of WU is small because the amount of data to process is small.

Hello Vlad.
Thank you for answer and explanation.
Why they need the power of BOINC ?
Me alone, i crunch about 400 WU in about one hour, with normal CPU and middle powerfull GPU )
It will say, I am able to calculate all the WU in about four days !!!

Best regards from Belgium (waiting next week saturday ! )

Why they need the power of BOINC ?

The power of BOINC was required to process the structures available in the COD at project’s launch. There were more than 380 000 of them. Of course, it was possible to do all the computations on the GPU-enabled HPC, but the one I have at my work is occupied with other tasks. So, for this project I could use only a few nodes and it would take a couple of years. With the help of BOINC and the volunteers it took only 2 months.

You are correct that BOINC is not required to process the newly added structures because a single PC equipped with a high-end GPU can do the job. However, since the project already works why not keep it? Almost no additional work from my side is required to keep the project running. And because very small computational resources are required from the volunteers, the project does not hamper other BOINC projects.

Hello Vlad,
I fully agree with all explanations and resons to keep it on BOINC.
Xanson requires a few hours to run each two weeks.
It will nothing change on other projects.
So today, I am in starting block !!!
With hope to be able to receive a lot of WU.
With hope that some teams, not monopolyze all WU !!!
